Update August 13, 2016

MNSnap Visit
On Sunday August 7, WAHS hosted the Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program (MNSnap) again. It was another successful visit for the MNSnap group. There were 10 dogs, 1 rabbit, and 21 cats fixed. Thank you to MNSnap for offering their wonderful service to the Winona area and beyond. Thank you to the day’s volunteers Jess, Shawn, Jessalyn, and Linda for their hard work.

If you are interested in learning more about MNSnap or would like to utilize their services, visit their website mnsnap.org. Their next visit is December 11.

Please email us at wahs@hbci.com if you would be interested in volunteering for a MNSnap visit in the future (we have enough volunteers for December 11 but will contact you for visits in 2017).

The Winona Area Humane Society serves many surrounding cities. The shelter would like to warn all cat owners to keep their cats indoors. There have been close to 20 cats that have tested positive for Feline Leukemia (FeLV). The cities with confirmed cases are Peterson, Rushford, Lewiston, Winona, and several rural areas in between.

Feline Leukemia (FeLV) is an infectious and deadly disease. If you allow your cat outdoors you are going to risk exposing your feline. FeLV can only affect cats; it cannot be transmitted to humans or other animals. This disease can be passed through blood, saliva, urine, and feces and can be spread through food dishes and litter boxes.

This IS a preventable disease. The easiest way to prevent the transmission of the disease is to keep your pet cat(s) indoors.

Testing for FeLV can be done at local veterinary clinics.

This month’s volunteers of the month are Kassandra Pomakis (cat care) and Al Przybylski (dog walking).

Kassandra started volunteering in early April. She is the manager at Winona Sandwich Company but finds time to volunteer at least once a week, often on short notice. She’s almost always willing to come in if there is a sudden opening or need. And she recently adopted Diesel and Calypso.

Al has been a volunteer for longer than we can remember. When Al was an employee, he was our faithful maintenance and cleaning person 5 mornings a week, walked the dogs for the first shift of the day when he was here, and continued to find time to volunteer. Since he left our staff, he has remained a faithful dog walker (doing several shifts a week and some times a day), helping feed the feral cats in the morning, weed whacking, mowing, and still continues to do some other maintenance stuff around the building. He is always willing to help when asked. Both Kassandra and Al are wonderful examples of the volunteers we have here at WAHS. Thank you both for your hard work, love of the animals, and commitment to our organization.

Each month, we will select two new volunteers of the month. In our quarterly newsletter (The Scoop), we will then pick two from that group to be the subjects of our Volunteer Spotlight section.

Attention WAHS fans, our “I Would Cuddle You So Hard” t-shirts are now on sale for $10.00 each and our wristbands are 50% off. Stop in and stock up for friends, family, or yourself!

Wanted: large, extra large, and extra extra large baskets. Summer is a great time to watch for big baskets at garage sales. We need a lot of these sizes for the WTSA this fall. Please drop off baskets at WAHS during our open hours (Tues to Fri 12-5, Sat 10-2).

If you have an interest in helping with the Wine Tasting and Silent Auction, we would love to have you. To get involved, call our office (507-452-3135) and leave your name to be passed on to the WTSA committee.
